Crochet!
This bag was lovingly handmade by Wayuu indigenous women. Their creativity, expertise and learning ability are reflected in the quality of their handicrafts. A high-quality bag is characterized by a tight weave and is created using three techniques: vertical weaving, "atulush" knotting and crocheting. With this project, Mama Tierra offers financial independence to indigenous women in La Guajira, an area between Colombia and Venezuela.
Swiss design by Patrizia Stalder
Designed by Patrizia Stalder, a Swiss multi-faceted artist, working as a painter, illustrator and graphic designer. Patrizia’s illustrations have been included in the “200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 18/19” publication by Lürzer's Archiv. Lürzer's Archiv presents creatively outstanding campaigns from all over the world and enjoys a high reputation in many countries.
Inspired by the legend of Maa'ala
According to the oral tradition of the Wayuu indigenous people, Maa'ala was a young free-spirited woman who refused to marry. Blinded by love and hurt to be rejected, the man who was madly in love with her enchanted her into a snake. So from then on, Maa'ala lived as a reptile and wandered the Caribbean desert instead of being forced to bear children and live as a wife in the polygynous Wayuu society. The Maa'ala snake is also represented in our "Isashii Collection".
Empowering women
Mama Tierra offers pre-payments and working material to the indigenous women, thereby strengthening their financial independence. The focus is on women because they ensure the well-being of the family, securing its income and educating the children.
Material: 100% Polyacrylic yarn produced by the factory Miratex in Colombia. Azo dye-free, Iso-Standard 9001: 2000.
