Crochet!
This bag was lovingly handmade by Wayuu indigenous women. Their creativity, expertise and learning ability are reflected in the quality of their handicrafts. A high-quality bag is characterized by a tight weave and is created using three techniques: vertical weaving, "atulush" knotting and crocheting. With this project, Mama Tierra offers financial independence to indigenous women in La Guajira, an area between Colombia and Venezuela.
Swiss design by Dr. Lourdes Grollimund
Dr. Lourdes Grollimund designed this great piece. Lourdes researches western trends, seasonal colour styles and motifs in a benchmarking analysis. This results in irresistible, high-quality accessories.
Cotton from Colombia
Mama Tierra uses sustainable materials such as cotton yarn from Colombia. Since most indigenous textiles are made from plastic based yarns, the production of the Mama Tierra accessories not only avoids using fossil-fuel by-products, but also contributes to a reduction in plastic waste in La Guajira, Colombia’s most rural area.
Empowering women
Mama Tierra offers pre-payments and working material to the indigenous women, thereby strengthening their financial independence. The focus is on women because they ensure the well-being of the family, securing its income and educating the children.
Material: 100% Polyacrylic yarn produced by the factory Miratex in Colombia. Azo dye-free, Iso-Standard 9001: 2000.
