GOTS certified cotton
Mama Tierra uses sustainable materials such as GOTS-certified cotton yarn. Since most indigenous textiles are made from plastic-based yarns, the production of the Mama Tierra accessories thus not only avoids using fossil-fuel by-products but also contributes to a reduction in plastic waste in La Guajira, Colombia’s most rural area.

Design by Coral Hernandez
Mama Tierra creates designs based on social anthropological research. That is how the incredible Wayuu mythology inspired Desigual designer Coral Hernandez to create this pattern. As an illustrator Coral worked for brands like Betsey Johnson, Santoro London, Desigual and Mango. Her work for the fashion company Gusto Barcelona led her to participate in the finest fashion collections in Madrid.

Made in Venezuela
In the 1970s, Wayuu tapestry or image making was particularly popular. From the Fira de Barcelona to the MoMa in New York, Wayuu handcrafts could be admired in museums all over the world. The artistic motifs are painstakingly woven into the fabric using colorful threads wound on so-called weaver boats. However, tapestry went out of fashion and many artisans lost their  jobs. The Mama Tierra design team has given another chance to this ancient technique by transforming the tapestries into beautiful clutches and pillow cases that have become very popular.

Empowering Indigenous women
MAMA TIERRA's vision is the self-determination of Indigenous women. For this purpose, our organization sells accessories crafted by Indigenous peoples and thereby offers  them existence-saving wages and financial independence.
