GOTS-certified cotton
The yarn used is GOTS-certified cotton from Peru. As most of the indigenous textiles in the Caribbean are made of polyacrylic, the production of Mama Tierra accessories contributes to a reduction of plastic waste in Colombia's most rural area, La Guajira.
Made in Venezuela
In the 1970s Wayuu tapestry or pictorial art was particularly popular. From the Fira de Barcelona to the MoMa in New York, Wayuu craftsmanship could be admired in museums around the world. The artistic motifs are carefully woven into the fabric with colourful threads on so-called weaving shuttles. However, tapestry went out of fashion and many artisans lost their jobs. Mama Tierra's design team has now revived the technique and design of these tapestries and transformed them into beautiful cases and cushion covers that are enjoying great popularity.
Inspired by indigenous mythology
Birds play an important role in indigenous myths. For example, the Wayuu believe that the earth was ruled by birds before it was inhabited by humans. Even today, birds represent the clans of the Wayuu. For example, the eagle represents the Ipuana clan and stands for their mythical ancestor.
Empowering indigenous women
Mama Tierra's vision is to enable indigenous women to lead self-determined and financially independent lives. We do this by distributing the accessories produced by Wayuu Indians in their homeland under fair conditions.
