GOTS-certified cotton
Mama Tierra uses sustainable materials such as GOTS certified cotton yarn from Peru. Since most indigenous textiles are made from plastic based yarns, the production of the Mama Tierra accessories thus not only avoids using fossil-fuel by-products, but also contributes to a reduction in plastic waste in La Guajira, Colombia’s most rural area.
Design inspired in indigenous mythology
The Maa’ala snake, also present in the “Isashii Collection”, refers to the totemic animal of the Uraliyu clan and is based on one of its myths. Following the Wayuu oral tradition, Maa’ala was a young woman, who refused to marry. So, she was bewitched by a man in love with her. Condemned to be transformed into a snake, Maa’ala preferred to live as a reptile and wander through the Caribbean desert, instead of bearing children and being a wife in the Wayuu polygynist society.
Swiss design by Patrizia Stalder
The illustrator and graphic artist Patrizia Stalder designed the collection "Isashii" with Mama Tierra.
