GOTS-certified cotton
The yarn used is GOTS certified cotton from Peru. So far, most of the native textiles in the Caribbean are made of polyacrylic, for which plastic is needed. By using and spreading GOTS, Mama Tierra not only introduces sustainable materials to the area, but also helps to reduce plastic waste.
Inspired by indigenous mythology
According to the traditional myths of the Wayuu, Maa'ala was a young woman who refused to marry. Furious because of this, the man who was obsessed with her transformed her into a snake. Still, Maa'ala preferred to live as a reptile and from then on, crept freely through the Caribbean desert instead of giving birth to children and taking on the role of a wife in the polygynous Wayuu society. The Maa'ala snake is also represented in our "Isashii-Collection".
Made in Venezuela
This pouch was lovingly made by the Wayuu indigenous people in Venezuela. After Haiti, Venezuela is the second poorest country in South America! But the production of the accessories for Mama Tierra has become a secure source of income for the indigenous people. In the 1970s, Wayuu tapestry or pictorial art was extremely popular. From the Fira de Barcelona to the MoMa in New York, Wayuu handicrafts were on display in museums all over the world. However, tapestry went out of fashion. Mama Tierra's design team has now transformed these tapestries into beautiful pouches and pillowcases.
