The Wayuu call this band “Kutpera”. Traditionally, it is used as an element in the donkey saddle. Donkeys are important farm animals for the Wayuu indigenous people. The Wayuu honour their animals by decorating them with such colourful bands. Usually the men make the straps for the donkeys. The Wayuu also use the kutpera as a very resistant type of shoulder strap for their traditional bags.
Piñatex
These accessories are made of pineapple leaves processed into eco-leather. The pineapple’s stable leaf fibers surprisingly offer an equivalent substitute for animal leather.
Made in Venezuela
The strap was lovingly made by the Wayuu indigenous people in Venezuela. Venezuela is the second poorest country in South America after Haiti! Help the Wayuu secure an income. The production of Mama Tierra accessories is now a good reliable source of income for Wayuu in Venezuela. Especially because the indigenous people earn in Colombian pesos. This way they escape the high inflation rate in Venezuela.
Material: 100% synthetic fibres (polyacrylic), azo dye-free, Iso-Standard 9001:2000. Piñatex.
