Mama Tierra x Van Gogh Museum: A Tribute to Art and Craftsmanship

Mama Tierra is honored to have been given the opportunity to create an exclusive collection of handmade tapestry clutches and charms for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, bringing the timeless beauty of Vincent van Gogh’s masterpieces to life through artisanal craftsmanship.

Inspired by Sunflowers (1889) and Irises (1890), the pieces reflect Van Gogh’s signature use of color while incorporating the ancestral tapestry technique of Wayuu artisans. The creative process required patience and great attention to detail, as we sought to respect Van Gogh’s vision as accurately as possible. Using the intricate tapestry technique, our artisans carefully translated the essence of these masterpieces into textile designs, ensuring that every stitch paid tribute to his artistry.

“We are deeply honored that the Van Gogh Museum invited Mama Tierra to create this collection, translating these iconic works into wearable art,” says Lourdes Grollimund, co-founder of Mama Tierra. “Each clutch is not just a fashion piece but a celebration of culture, creativity, and fine craftsmanship.”

These exclusive Mama Tierra x Van Gogh Museum pieces are available only at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and through its official webshop. Every purchase supports indigenous artisans, preserving their traditional skills and empowering Wayuu communities through fair wages and sustainable work.

The Van Gogh Museum created a dedicated landing page to showcase the exclusive pieces crafted by Mama Tierra. This online space not only presents the unique designs inspired by Van Gogh’s masterpieces but also shares the story behind their creation, emphasizing the artistry of the Wayuu artisans and the shared commitment to cultural preservation. Visitors can explore the collection and discover how these handcrafted accessories pay homage to Van Gogh’s masterpieces and Wayuu craftsmanship in a meaningful way. The landing page can be accessed here.
