Remember the first week of your newborn baby or the one of somebody close to you? Just before the baby arrives, there is this nesting process where moms- and dads-to-be make sure their baby has everything it needs during the first weeks of life. Imagine you were not able to afford it. This is exactly the rough reality for many Wayuu women in rural Colombia and Venezuela. And with your help, Mama Tierra is determined to change this.

I am so relieved to receive vitamins while I am breastfeeding.

Because we can help!

Help a mother to give her newborn
baby the best start in life.

Deaths of children under 5 years old have regrettably increased in recent years in the Department of La Guajira, according to government data.

The conflict

The rate of childhood malnutrition and under-five mortality is among the highest in Colombia and Venezuela. Sadly, indigenous communities are at even higher risk than the rest of the population. Hospitals are far and necessary C-section procedures are unaffordable for Wayuu women.

Our work

Mama Tierra looks after pregnant indigenous women, gifting them baby clothes, organic diapers, natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory baby cream and also vitamin supplements for moms for healthier breastfeeding. The NGO also pays for maternity leave.

This project attends UN’s Sustainable Development Goals:

Why do we needyour help?

Each maternity is sacred. At Mama Tierra we take care of the pregnant women and cover the medical check ups needed. It is important that women have enough vitamins and a balanced diet during the pregnancy.

In Venezuela, hospitals do not provide the medical supplies needed for surgery. A C-section is much more expensive than a natural birth and indigenous women can’t afford it. Mama Tierra covers the costs of C-section procedures when needed.

After giving birth, Mama Tierra covers the indigenous women’s maternity leave. In this way moms do not have to worry about their finances and can entirely dedicate to their newborn baby. In addition, every mom is provided with a newborn kit.
